You may be surprised to hear that Jane Street Community Garden actually funded primarily by donations and grants. It is understandable to think that we receive regular funding from Council or Government, as there have been a lot of renovations and improvements made over the past years. However, this is not the case; and until that day comes, we need your help to keep us going.

We are extremely thankful to our sponsors and supporters for their contributions and we are nothing without the volunteers who keep the garden looking amazing. If you are interested in volunteering/helping at the garden click here.

We appreciate any donation, large or small. Without financial support, we would simply not exist. 100% of every contribution goes directly into the garden.

Some examples of ongoing garden costs:

  • Straw for the composting hub - $150/month ($10/bale)
We are open to any/all suggestions on ways to reduce this cost.

  • Seeds & seedlings - $50/month
We grow and propagate plants to sell at our plant stand at
The Green Grocer. This provides a small but continuous income stream.

  • Mulch/woodchip - $800/year
If we were to top up mulch and woodchip around the garden once per year, this is the minimum it would cost.
We are open to any/all suggestions on ways to reduce this cost.

  • Soil - $500/year
Used in raising seeds, propagating plants and topping up garden beds.

  • Replacing damaged tools, gloves, materials etc. - $250/year

  • General maintenance - $50/month
From replacing screws to patching holes (You would be surprised at how much small-scale damage is done to the garden).

  • Snacks and refreshments at working bees - $50/month
At all of our working bees, we endeavour to supply some simple snacks, refreshments and treats as a thankyou for your hard work.

  • We also pay a wage to our garden coordinator. Tom is allocated 8hrs per week to run working bees, build upgrades, coordinate future plans, manage social media, emails and the website, apply for grants, etc.

SOME ONGOING & FUTURE PROJECTS WHICH NEED FUNDING:

  • Cages over the raised garden beds - $500 each
We have unfortunately found that netting does little to stop our persistent, 4-legged, rodent friends. Therefore, we are in the process of building wire mesh cages over each of the raised garden beds. Without them, we lose almost all the crops we try and grow. $500 might seem like a lot of money, but that includes approx. $250 in materials and minimum 5hrs work.

  • Native Plants - $300
We are slowly transitioning the open garden spaces to be filled with native plants. Combining both edible and insect/butterfly attracting varieties. We see an opportunity here for a business to run a ‘team building’-type afternoon at the garden. It would serve its benefits to the company, while also making an amazing contribution to the garden. If you are interested in running a corporate team-building session at the garden (in any capacity) feel welcome to get in touch.

  • Extend irrigation lines - $450
Currently, we have irrigation in the greenhouse as well as the raised garden beds. However, we have a dream of extending the irrigation lines to other parts of the garden.

  • Additional raised garden beds - $1,500 each (including a cage over the top)
We currently have 12 raised garden beds, which are rented out. We are looking to install another 3 beds. Sponsoring the build of a new raised garden bed including rental of the plot for 1 year (priced at $500).

  • Upgrading the undercover area - Total -
Our current undercover area is in need of some TLC. New roofing sheets are the

OTHER WAYS YOU can DONATE:

  • Seeds or edible plants
Please just ask beforehand to check if we would like them or not. We do not want your sad, old houseplants.

  • Garden tools or equipment
If you have any garden tools or equipment that you no longer need, we are more than happy to take them off your hands. We always need more smaller items such as gloves, secateurs or spades, and will never say no to larger tools either.

  • Leftover landscaping/building supplies
If you, or someone you know, has recently completed a landscaping or construction job and have leftover supplies, we might be interested. Whether it be timber, nails, screws, steel, irrigation materials, wire mesh etc. Please ask beforehand to check if we need them or not.

  • Opportunities to reduce our spending
Perhaps you have access to large amounts of straw, mulch or soil, large quantities of pots, contacts in high places, a rich friend wondering what they should do with all their money, marketing or design skills, anything at all. We would love to hear from you!
